New Life, New Hope
The Rebirth of Catholic Education in the Gulf Coast
When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita unleashed their wrath on the Gulf Coast Region last August, lives were ripped into tiny pieces. Businesses, schools and churches were destroyed. Entire communities were erased from the landscape. In the midst of the darkness, tiny beacons of hope are beginning to shine. Catholic churches and schools devastated by one of this nation’s largest-ever natural disasters are coming back to life. Knowing that people would not return without housing, jobs and education, Catholic church leaders and educators responded quickly to re-open schools and help begin rebuilding. It has been a remarkable resurrection and rebirth that began within days after the storm. Schools re-opened one-by-one and welcomed all students. No one asked if they had gone to school there before or if they were Catholic.
